Capahas pull out win in ninth inning

WEST FRANKFORT, Ill. -- The Craftsman Union Capahas scored a run in the top of the ninth inning and defeated the host Southern Illinois Merchants 3-2 late Wednesday night.

Gary Gilbert scored on a wild pitch in the ninth as the Capahas improved their record to 17-1 heading into today's 6 p.m. home doubleheader against Saline County, Ill.

Justin Simpher pitched eight innings for the victory, allowing one earned run and eight hits. He struck out six and walked one.

"That's the best Justin has pitched for us," Capahas manager Jess Bolen said. "He really looked good."

Jason Chavez pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the save.

The Capahas had seven hits, led by Wade Hansford with two.

Vancleve wins Chip-A-Ways event

Mary Vancleve won the Chip-A-Ways weekly event at Cape Jaycee Municipal Golf Course.

Jan Keefe finished first in Class B. Carol Brown won Play of the Day, which was "use par-4 holes for score." Bev Wink posted the low-putt total.
