Pancoast selected for Big 12 honor roll
Kim Pancoast was among 75 University of Nebraska athletes chosen for the Big 12 Commissioner's Spring Honor Roll.
Pancoast, an NU freshman and Central graduate, is a member of the women's track and field team. She was among 13 of the 75 NU athletes that finished with a 4.0 GPA in the spring semester.
Cape Junior Legion reaches tournament final
The Cape Girardeau Cliff's Rent To Own Junior American Legion baseball squad has gone 3-0 to advance to the championship game in its own round-robin tournament this weekend.
In Saturday's action, Cape was trailing 5-0 to Imperial going into the sixth inning behind the arm of Matt Hellrich. Cape rallied in the sixth scoring six runs to pick up the 6-5 win.
Tyler Bruce relieved Hellrich to get the win for Cape. Bruce pitched 1 2/3 innings, striking out two and allowing no hits. Tony Leuckel, Steve Miinch and Blake Essner all went 2-for-3 for Cape.
After the comeback victory over Imperial, Cape wasted no time disposing of St. Peters in their second game of the day, 10-2.
Stewart Doyle got the win for Cape, allowing seven hits and striking out three. Cape combined for 14 hits as Hellrich got his revenge going 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Doyle helped his cause by going 2-for-3 and adding a home run.
The championship game will feature Cape vs. Sikeston today at 4:30 p.m. at Central Junior High . The third place game will be Jackson vs. Imperial at 2:30 p.m., after the fifth place game between Dunklin County and Scott City at noon.
Jackson Senior Legion splits with Bluff
Jackson's Senior American Legion split a pair of games Saturday, winning the District 14 opener 15-4 and losing the non-district nightcap 12-2.
Austin McDowell pitched all seven innings for Jackson (12-8) in the first game, striking out eight and allowing four earned runs. He helped his own cause at the plate by going 2-for-5 with a home run. Jason Meystedt and Brandon Gendren also added homers and had multiple hits for Jackson. Tony Longman went 2-for-5 and Trevor Thompson went 3-for-3 .
In the nightcap, Jackson committed three errors on its way to a 12-2 defeat.
