Vieira leads charge for Gator Swim Team

The Gator Swim Team brought home 21 medals, including nine golds, at the 15-team Ozark 'A' Swimming Championships in Carbondale, Ill.

Seven of the golds were won by 13-year-old Gabriela Vieira, who turned in first-place performances in the 200-, 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle, 100 and 200 backstroke, and 100 and 200 butterfly. Vieira established new Gator records in all of the events except the 1,000 freestyle. The seven golds gave Vieira a perfect score of 140 points and the high-point trophy in the girls 13-14 age division.

Brogan Davis won gold in the 50 backstroke, breaking the Gators' team record for 10-year-olds set by Jason Owens in 1990. Davis also captured silver in the 50 freestyle and 50 breaststroke and bronze in the 100 freestyle and 50 butterfly. He finished fourth in the boys 10-and-under point standings.

Kristian Troxel captured the other gold, winning the 1,000 freestyle in the 15-year-olds division. Troxel also claimed silver in the 400 IM and placed third in boys 15-and-older point standings.

Claiming silvers were Caitlyn Palmer (13, 100 and 200 butterfly), Madeline Siefert (14, 200 breastroke) and Helen Wojdylo (13, 100 breaststroke).

Bronze medals were claimed by Wojdylo (13, 200 breaststroke), Caleb Coots (18, 400 IM) and Allison Hobbs (17, 1,000 freestyle).

Coots finished sixth in the boys 15-and-older point standings, while Palmer was sixth in the girls 13-14 division.

Brey cards hole-in-one at Cape Girardeau C.C.

Judy Brey recently fired a hole-in-one at Cape Girardeau Country Club.

Brey used a 3-wood to ace No. 16, a par 3 playing 165 yards. Betty Michel and Shirley Moore witnessed the shot.

York fires ace at Kimbeland C.C.

Mike York of Cape Girardeau recently carded his first hole-in-one at Kimbeland Country Club.

York used an 8-iron to ace No. 12, a par 3 playing 169 yards. James Banken witnessed the shot.

Benton wins men's singles title

Seth Benton swept Troy Bell 6-2, 6-2 in the championship match of the men's open singles at the 2010 Turkey Day tennis tournament at Class Act Fitness.

Tom Blair won the men's A singles, defeating Ish Patel 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

Benton and Jerry Kinnaman paired to win the men's doubles, defeating Shane Anderson and Mitch Kinder 6-4, 7-6.

Terri Popp won the women's exhibition singles against Linda Tansil.

Jonathan Bell and Donna Ryan were victorious against Troy Bell and Sarah Bell in the mixed doubles exhibition.
