Southeast women win Saluki Invitational
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southeast Missouri State University's women's cross country team won the 28th annual Saluki Invitational Saturday at SIU-Carbondale.
Southeast finished with 45 points to top the nine-team field, beating runnerup Southern Indiana by 21 points.
Freshman Lindsay Zieler, competing in only her second meet of the season, led the Otahkians with an eighth-place finish, covering the 5K course in 19 minutes, 4 seconds. She was followed by teammates Kris Woolf (9, 19:05), Kaci Pilcher (10, 19:07), Anna Verseman (12, 19:12) and Brooke Woodruff (18, 19:38).
Southeast finished fifth among nine teams in the men's 8K, led by Chad Sierman who finished 21st in 26:46. Rounding out the Indians' top five: Brian Whitehead (23, 26:57), Gabe Lutes (31, 27:24), Jared Tanz (48, 28:06) and Adam Daughhetee (41, 28:12).
Southern Indiana won the men's race with 39 points.
Southeast soccer team shuts out Lipscomb
Southeast Missouri State University's women's soccer team (9-4-1) put 21 shots on goal and pounded visiting Lipscomb 3-0 in a nonconference game Saturday.
Junior Erika Todd and Diana Poovey each put four shots on goal. Todd, defender Valerie Henderson and midfielder Megan Hejlek accounted for the Otahkian goals.
Southeast goalie Amanda Wrzos played the entire game for the shutout. Wrzos faced one shot. Poovey recorded the lone assist for Southeast.
Saturday's game was Southeast's last nonconference game. The Otahks will finish the season with four straight Ohio Valley Conference games:Oct. 18 at Morehead State; Oct. 25 against Austin Peay and Oct. 27 against Tennessee-Martin, both at home; and Oct. 30 at Murray State.
