Redhawks baseball to play fall series

Southeast Missouri State will showcase its 2011 baseball team with its "Steak and Beans" series beginning today.

The annual competition for bragging rights features the winning side receiving a steak dinner and the losing side eating beans.

Game 1 in the best-of-three series will be at 4 p.m. today at Capaha Field. Game 2 will be at 4 p.m. Friday with Game 3 set for noon Saturday.

Westwood Hills Country Club of Poplar Bluff, Mo., won the 10-team SEMO Cup golf tournament Saturday at Bootheel Golf Club in Sikeston, Mo.

Westwood Hills posted a 687 total in the 36-hole competition, finishing 13 strokes ahead of defending champion Kimbeland Country Club (700) of Jackson. The host Bootheel was third with 704, followed by Dalhousie Golf Club (711), Cape Girardeau Country Club (714), Bent Creek Golf Course (715) of Jackson, Sikeston Country Club (723), Kennett Country Club (740), Hidden Trails Country Club (743) of Dexter, Mo., and Cape Jaycee Municipal Golf Course (766).

Each team was made up of 12 players who paired up to compete in best ball, scramble, Chapman alternate shot and alternate shot. Nine holes were played in each format.

Alan Benton and Blake Driskell of Cape Girardeau Country Club shot a 29 for the low score in scramble. Tom Fowler and David Gelshiemer of Bootheel shot a 32 in Chapman, Steve Logel and Tim Kelly of Cape Girardeau Country Club had a 31 in alternate shot, and the pairs of John Litzelfelner and Todd Obergoenner of Bent Creek and Todd Smith and Todd Easton of Kimbeland tied at 32 in best ball.
