Baseball

* Jackson Fall Instructional League: The Jackson Fall Instructional League, for players ages 10 through 18, begins the week of Aug. 17 and runs for 10 weeks at Jackson's Legion Field. Times are 6 to 8:15 p.m. Ages 16 through 18 will meet each Monday and Wednesday, for 20 total sessions at a cost of $325, which includes free admission to the college showcase. Ages 13 through 15 will meet each Tuesday, for 10 total sessions at a cost of $125. Ages 10 through 12 will meet each Thursday, for 10 total sessions at a cost of $125. * Fall registration: The Jackson boys baseball league, for players ages 8 to 18, will hold fall registration from 1 to 4 p.m. today at West Park Mall. Forms also can be found at www.jblbaseball.org. Forms must be postmarked by Thursday.

Football

* Jackson youth registration: Jackson Area Youth Football fall signups will be from 8 a.m. to noon Aug. 22 at the football complex. Players must be present to be weighed and fitted for equipment. Cost: $105, which includes game jersey. Info: Ron Hobeck, 243-1311 or Eric Freidrich, 243-2565.

Running

* Steps for Justice race: The Steps for Justice 1-mile run and walk-a-thon will take place Aug. 29 at the Charleston Baptist Association campgrounds in Benton, Mo. The 1-mile race begins at 11 a.m. and the walk-a-thon starts at 11:30 a.m. Cost: $5. Proceeds benefit the Scott County Sheriff's Mischelle Lawless case. Info: Debbie Nelson, 471-2515.

Softball

* Tryouts: The Heartland Bulldogs 12-and-under fast-pitch girls softball traveling team will hold tryouts Aug. 22 at 10 a.m. at Arena Park field No. 1. Girls who have not reached their 13th birthday before Jan. 1, 2010 are eligible. Info: Jack McDonald, 450-1949.

Tennis

* Social doubles: Doubles players are invited to play socially Saturday mornings at the Southeast Missouri State University tennis facility. Play begins at 8 a.m. There is no cost and players of all abilities are invited.

Triathlon

* Trail of Tears triathlon: The Trail of Tears triathlon is scheduled for Sept. 12 at Trail of Tears State Park. The course consists of a half-mile swim, 15-mile bike ride and 4-mile run. The race begins at 9 a.m. Cost: $35 for individuals and $40 for teams before Sept. 1; $45 for individuals and $50 for teams after Sept. 1. Non-USAT members must buy a one-day membership for $10.
