ST. LOUIS -- St. Louis Rams safety Adam Archuleta and running back Steven Jackson engaged in a brief scuffle that quickly was broken up in practice Saturday morning at Rams Park.

Jackson, who wears a gold jersey that means he should not be jostled, caught a pass and took off up the middle. Archuleta, who is coming off a subpar, injury-marred 2004 season, popped him. The two briefly tangled before second-year cornerback Dwight Anderson got in between them and broke it up.

The 172-pound Anderson couldn't explain what motivated him.

"I don't know," he said, grinning. "I was like, 'Oh, I need to break this up.' It came as a shock."

Coach Mike Martz said he did not witness the altercation.

"I didn't see it. But this is camp and those things happen," Martz said.

Tight end Roland Williams agreed that it's not a big deal.

"You don't have guys here that dislike each other," Williams said. "Even though we had a little scuffle out there today, there's a lot of love out there on the football field and that makes it fun."

Cornerback Jemetrius Butler and reserve running back Dusty McGrorty sat out Saturday.

Butler has a bone bruise on his right knee. He is treating it with ice. The injury happened Friday when he was cutting while covering receiver Isaac Bruce on a post pattern. Butler said he planted wrong and stumbled.

"It's nothing that's serious, but we're going to keep him out for maybe a week or so," Martz said.

McGrorty sustained a knee injury Friday when he was hit by safety Mike Furrey during a drill.
