Andrews' TD lone bright spot in loss

~ Central allowed 42 unanswered points to Parkway North.

CREVE COEUR, Mo. -- You know you've had a bad night when the opposing team's place kicker is setting records for extra points made.

Parkway North freshman place-kicker Aaron Hummert set a school record by connecting on eight extra points.

To call the Cape Central football team's season opening game bad would be gentle.

The Tigers were taken behind the woodshed, given their whooping and sent on the long ride home as Parkway North rolled to a season-opening 56-7 win.

It was a clinic in all aspects of the game by the Vikings (1-0). Whatever they wanted to do against the Tigers (0-1), they pretty much did it.

Parkway North rushed for 264 yards and four touchdowns. Senior quarterback Brian Fincannon was an efficient 4-of-6 passing for 60 yards and two touchdowns. The Vikings' special teams tacked on two more touchdowns, amassing almost 200 yards on punt returns alone.

All in all, this wasn't the opening Central spent its offseason building toward.

"I thought we could make a better stand against a good team like Parkway North," Tiger coach Lawrence Brookins said.

The Vikings took the opening kickoff and marched 63 yards, scoring when Fincannon connected with junior wide receiver Anthony Davenport for a 6-yard touchdown. The drive lasted less than four minutes and Hummert connected on the first of his many point-after tries.

After a three-and-out by the Tigers, the Vikings went back to work.

Taking the ball from its own 47, Parkway North bullied its way down the field, scoring when senior tailback Jacob McKinley dived into the end zone from two yards out. Another Hummert special made it 14-0.

Just as things were looking like they might get out of control, Central junior running back Cantrell Andrews took the handoff and blazed down the left sideline on his way to a 62-yard touchdown. The point after was good, cutting the lead to 14-7.

Parkway North nabbed the ensuing kickoff and, on the first play from scrimmage, fullback Chuck Gray took the ball through the middle of Central defense on his way to a 72-yard touchdown. Another Hummert point after made it 21-7 with 1 minute, 28 second remaining in the first quarter.

The Tigers' ensuing drive stalled. Sophomore Raymond Woldtvedt punted from his own 25-yard line with 11:17 remaining in the second quarter. The Vikings' McKinley caught the ball at his own 34-yard line and promptly returned it down the right sideline for a touchdown, crossing the goal line with 10:59 left in the first half making the score, after yet another extra point by Hummert, 28-7.

The highlights were few and far between for the Tigers as they struggled in all phases of the game. They were forced to burn timeouts in the first half because players weren't on the field. They were flagged for having too many players on the field.

"Nobody is going to feel sorry for us after this one," Brookins said. "Not even their mommas are going to feel sorry for them after this."
