It ranks as the second-easiest hole on the course for the boys through two rounds, but the par-5 No. 7 turned into an adventure for boys leader Talor Gooch. He was forced to take an unplayable lie off the tee and settled for a double bogey.
"I hacked my way around the entire hole," he said.
Four of the five players directly behind Gooch carded birdies to make up some ground and keep Gooch from running away.
Gavin Hall, who sits second at 5-under par, scored a birdie to help cap his round of 69.
T.J. Vogel, Johnathan Schnitzer and Blake Biddle all scored a birdie, while Yaroslav Merkulov took a bogey, which dropped him into a tie for fourth at 3 under.
On the girls side, the hole also proved an adventure.
Leader Victoria Tanco's errant tee shot resulted in a penalty stroke. But she was able to reach the green in four and sank a 20-foot putt to save par.
Nicole Zhang, who sits a stroke behind Tanco, also scored a bogey on the hole.
