Adamson, Parmley are candidates for awards

~ The Southeast baseball players are among 25 players under consideration for national awards

Southeast Missouri State baseball players Kenton Parmley and Michael Adamson have been selected as candidates for two national awards.

It was announced Monday that Parmley is a quarterfinalist for the Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year Award. Parmley was among 25 shortstops selected.

Also Monday, it was announced that Adamson is among 25 players on the watch list for the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award. The Olerud Award recognizes a player who makes an impact both on the mound and at the plate.

Both awards will be presented in Lubbock, Texas, on July 2 as part of the College Baseball Awards Show.

"It's a very nice honor for both these guys and they're very deserving," said Southeast coach Mark Hogan, whose senior All-American Jim Klocke is already a nominee for the nation's top catcher award along with being among 10 finalists for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award.

Parmley is batting .385 with 11 home runs, eight doubles, a triple, 38 RBIs and 10 stolen bases in 15 attempts. He also has scored a team-high 62 runs, which ties Southeast's single-season record.

"Kenton is having a tremendous season," Hogan said.

Parmley, who ranks eighth in the Ohio Valley Conference in batting and third in runs scored, is coming off a huge series at the University of Nebraska.

Even though Southeast lost all three games to the Cornhuskers over the weekend, Parmley went 9 for 13 with a homer. He had three hits in each contest.

Parmley, a native of Goreville, Ill., was Southeast's starting shortstop as a true freshman last year. He batted .306 and was selected to the OVC's all-freshmen team.

"Kenton had a very good freshman year, and he's just gotten better in every area," Hogan said.

Parmley is one of two OVC shortstops to make the Wallace Award list, joining Morehead State's Drew Lee.

Adamson, a junior college transfer, has made a major mark in left field and as a relief pitcher in his first season with the Redhawks.

Adamson, a native of Freeburg, Ill., is the OVC's No. seven hitter with a .406 average. He ranks second in hits (82), second in doubles (20) and fourth in runs scored (56). He also has five homers, two triples and 41 RBIs, and is six hits away from breaking Southeast's single-season record.

On the mound, Adamson is 1-2 with two saves and a 6.50 ERA. He has worked 18 innings covering 15 appearances.

"Michael has been a tremendous addition to our program," Hogan said. "He's having a great season offensively and has been very valuable out of the bullpen."

Adamson joins fellow OVC players Michael Bottoms of Morehead State and Chad Oberacker of Tennessee Tech on the Olerud Award watch list.

Southeast, 27-20 overall and 10-6 in the OVC, returns to conference play this weekend with a three-game series against Austin Peay that will mark the Redhawks' final home action of the season.

The Redhawks are third in the nine-team OVC, one game behind first-place Murray State and just percentage points behind second-place Tennessee Tech.

Austin Peay (22-22, 4-11) is last in the OVC as the Governors are in danger of missing the six-team conference tournament for the second straight season.
