A record number of participants turned out Saturday as the Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department hosted its 18th annual Youth Triathlon and Kids Run at Central Municipal Pool.

A total of 82 youngsters participated in the event, which was co-sponsored by the Gators swim team and Cape Bicycle and Fitness.

"We had so many kids that we ran out of T-shirts," said Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department aquatics coordinator Chad Sierman.

New to this year's event was the kid's one-mile run for ages 6 to 8.

The bicycle course for the youth triathlon was doubled in length with this year's course covering four miles, compared to the two-mile course of years past.

Taking home the overall triathlon titles were Riley Talbut of Jackson, who won the boys division with a time of 25:26; and Cailin McGinnis, also of Jackson, who finished atop the girls division with a time of 28:43.

Other triathlon winners included Matt and Ryan Gibson, both of Jackson, who won the boys 8-11 and 12-15 titles, respectively.

Iliana Arevalo won the girls 8-11 title and Mary Ford won the girls 12-15 division. Both Arevalo and Ford are from Cape Girardeau.

Raleigh Davis and Brennan Redinger won the boys 8-11 team title, while Michael Bohn, Lauren Castleman and Kate Bohn captured the boys 12-15 team title.

The boys 16-18 team title went to Austin Mehner, Hunter Givens and Peyton Waggener.

In the girls team contests, the group of Kyleigh Troxel, Paden Wachter and Jenny Powell finished atop the 8-11 division, while Lacie Robinson, Haley Yancey and Claire Gillard won the 12-15 division.
