1990 Kentucky Derby champion euthanized

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Unbridled, the 1990 Kentucky Derby champion, was euthanized after a bout of colic.

The 14-year-old stallion, who had been at Claiborne Farm near Paris, Ky., was put down at the Hagyard-Davidson-McGee Clinic on Thursday after it was determined that the condition was terminal.

"He'd had two previous operations and never fully gotten over the problem," said Gus Koch, farm manager at Claiborne.

Unbridled had surgery Sept. 21, after several bouts of colic this summer. He had a second operation Sept. 27, and returned to Claiborne Oct. 8. The horse seemed to be recovering nicely until problems developed Thursday, Koch said.

Unbridled, a bay son of Fappiano out of Gana Facil, won eight of 24 career starts and earned nearly $4.5 million. As a 3-year-old in 1990, he beat Summer Squall in the Kentucky Derby and Ibn Bey in the Breeders' Cup Classic.

Unbridled was also a success at stud, where he sired 24 stakes winners, including 1996 Kentucky Derby winner Grindstone and 2000 Preakness winner Red Bullet.

Compton wins pole for EA Sports 500

TALLADEGA, Ala. -- Stacy Compton grabbed his second Talladega Superspeedway pole of the season Friday and gave Dodge a sweep of the top qualifying spots at NASCAR's two restrictor-plate tracks this season.

The second-year driver, second from last in the 45-car qualifying line for Sunday's EA Sports 500, bumped the Chevrolet driven by Bobby Hamilton from the pole with a lap of 185.240 mph.

Compton joined Dodge boys Bill Elliott and Sterling Marlin, who won the poles at the Daytona races this season. The Intrepids, new to Winston Cup this year, took five of the top eight spots Friday.

Hamilton, who won the April race at Talladega, was fastest for most of the session and appeared to have the pole wrapped up with his lap of 184.438 before Compton's Melling Racing Intrepid drove onto the 2.66-mile, high-banked oval.

Marlin was third at 184.058, while Johnny Benson was fourth in a Pontiac at 184.019, followed by Elliott at 183.942, the Chevrolet of Dale Earnhardt Jr. at 183.867 and the Dodges of John Andretti at 183.684 and Kyle Petty at 183.585.

Heisman Trophy presentation moved

NEW YORK -- The Heisman Trophy presentation has been moved from the Downtown Athletic Club to the New York Marriott Marquis because of damage to the building in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The building, located a few blocks from the World Trade Center site, wasn't seriously damaged but the elevator system was declared unsafe. Jim Corcoran, president of the DAC, said Friday that the elevators should be fixed by the Dec. 8 ceremony honoring college football's top player, but the club would be hard-pressed to prepare the 71-year-old building for Heisman Trophy-related events scheduled for Dec. 7-10.

It will mark the first time in 67 years that the trophy will be presented somewhere other than the Downtown Athletic Club.

Magic's Miller to miss four weeks

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Orlando guard Mike Miller will miss 4-6 weeks after suffering a foot injury in the Magic's 112-93 preseason victory over the Houston Rockets on Friday night.

Miller, last season's Rookie of the Year, was diagnosed with a chip fracture of the fifth metatarsal in his right foot.

The injury happened when Houston's Cuttino Mobley stepped on Miller's foot during a scramble for a loose ball late in the third quarter. Miller, 20, immediately collapsed to the floor before limping to the locker room with the aid of a teammate and a trainer.

En route to the NBA top rookie honors, Miller averaged 11.9 points, four rebounds and 1.7 assists.
