WEST FRANKFORT, Ill. -- Kenneth J. Gray has been honored as "Citizen of the Year" at West Frankfort.
Gray was honored recently at the 50th annual West Frankfort Chamber of Commerce banquet.
Gray, a 45-year member of the West Frankfort chamber, spent 24 years in Congress. He was first elected to the House in 1954. He retired 20 years later, in 1974, but returned to the House in 1984.
He retired again in 1988 because of a bout with Lyme disease, from which he has recovered.
During Gray's tenure in Congress, he helped Southern Illinois obtain many improvements, including Rend Lake and Interstate 57.
