The moving wall carries all 58,196 names of soldiers who were killed or listed as missing during the Vietnam War. All names are legible, so that rubbings can be made from the moving wall like they are made from the Washington, D.C., memorial.

The moving wall is the creation of John Devitt, a Vietnam veteran who wanted to keep power of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial alive. Construction began in 1983 and finished a year later. It is paid for by donations from the public.

The moving wall is a V-shaped structure that is made from aluminum panels with a glossy black surface. Each wall measures 126 feet long.
