TWO DIE WHEN TRAIN SLAMS PICKUP TRUCK

ULLIN, Ill. -- An Ullin man and woman were killed Wednesday in Pulaski County when the pickup truck they were in was struck by a freight train.

The accident occurred at about 6:30 p.m. at a marked railroad crossing on Rock Crusher Road two miles south of Wetaug.

Authorities pronounced Irene Johnson, 73, and Ougsby Johnson, 71, both of Ulin, dead at the scene.

Illinois State Police said the pickup was struck in the side by the northbound train. Although marked, the crossing doesn't have a gate, police said.
