Several leaks in the roof of the Cape Girardeau Post Office have forced the carrier operation to be moved temporarily to the processing center at 475 Kell Farm Drive.
"The leaks in the roof have been causing us some problems," postmaster Michael Keefe said. "We have cases set up and water dripping down, so we've had to move equipment. We don't want mail getting wet."
The retail and post office box areas will continue at the post office at 320 N. Frederick.
Keefe said a structural engineer has said the roof needs to be replaced. The post office building is leased.
Keefe said it will be the responsibility of the lessor to make repairs or replace the roof. He would not say who owns the building.
But Keefe said the move is necessary. "Being that we're in a season where we could get a six-inch snow, it's worth it to take the extra precautions," he said.
Keefe said he didn't know how long the carrier operations would remain at the center.
