Every year, the Southeast Missourian presents one outstanding person with the Spirit of America award.

This year marks the 14th year the newspaper has given the award, which celebrates an individual who goes above and beyond to help others, give back to the community and uphold the American spirit.

"One year, the winner might be someone who is recognized universally around the community. The next, it might be someone who has made a tremendous difference, displaying the spirit of public service with amazing volunteerism, but who is more behind-the-scenes and unknown," said Jon K. Rust, publisher of the Southeast Missourian and co-president of Rust Communications. "We're proud to shine the spotlight on both these types of American community heroes, and we encourage everyone to stop and consider whom they might nominate."

A $1,000 cash prize will be awarded to the nominating organization or, if nominated by an individual, the charity of the nominating party's choice. The winner will be announced at the City of Cape Girardeau's Great American Fourth of July Celebration.

Past winners include Jerry Ford (2015), Mary Kasten (2014), Kenneth Bender (2013), Kent Zickfield (2012), David Hitt (2011), Rob Callahan (2010), Harry Rediger (2009), Jane Randol Jackson (2008), James Harnes Sr. (2007), Neal Edwards (2006), Melvin Gateley (2005), Dr. Dan Cotner (2004) and John "Doc" Yallaly (2003).

"Each of the past winners of the award represent something special -- patriotism, civic pride, community, entrepreneurship and more," said Lucas Presson, general manager of rustmedia. "To be able to celebrate these individuals and put a spotlight on many others is an honor for the Southeast Missourian."

Rust encouraged community members to nominate people by whom they've been inspired.

"If you know someone you think has truly made your community better, let us know," he said.

In 250 words or less, share the nominee's charitable and social memberships and why you believe the nominee best demonstrates the American spirit through patriotism, loyalty, generosity, civility and a strong work ethic.

The deadline for nominations is June 14.

Clubs and organizations in Cape Girardeau, Perry, Bollinger, Stoddard and Scott counties in Missouri and Union, Pulaski and Alexander counties in Illinois are invited to submit nominations.

Entries should be mailed to the Southeast Missourian, Spirit of America Award, PO Box 699, Cape Girardeau, MO 63701 or submitted via the online nomination form at www.semissourian.com/spirit.
