One thousand mini-eruptions will occur in Arena Park on Wednesday if all things go as planned. Science lovers will attempt to break the world record, currently at 853, for the most Mentos fountains launched into the air after the candies are dropped into bottles of diet soda.
The event will occur at 5 p.m. in recognition of Science Day as approved by legislators last year.
From 4 to 5 p.m. booths will be on display from the Bootheel Youth Museum, Challenger Learning Center, the Science Center of Southern Illinois, Discovery Playhouse, the Bollinger County Museum of Natural History, Southeast Missouri Hospital, Saint Francis Medical Center and CraftMasters KidSmart.
Meteorologist and science reporter Jason Lindsey from KFVS12 organized the event.
Participants must sign a release form available at www.kfvs12.com.
