The business community of Scott City continues to expand.

Bloomfield Road Landscape is preparing to transplant its operations to a new facility on East Outer Road along Interstate 55.

The move is prompted by a need for more visibility and a desire to grow the business.

When the new facility is ready, the landscaping company will move from its current location on Blackford Lane, near Dalhousie Golf Club and Strack Quarries.

"We're kind of on the outskirts of Cape, tucked away where no one can really see it," Travis Burger, owner of Bloomfield Road Landscape, said. "That's why we're moving."

Burger purchased the business about a year and a half ago, he said, and it has been in operation since 2000. He plans to offer the same services in the new location and is considering ways to expand after the move.

The property -- which is around seven acres, according to Tom Kelsey of Lorimont Place Ltd. -- will provide Burger with ample space to do so.

Burger said work began this week to prepare the land for the new construction.

"We're moving dirt, getting it all ready," Burger said. He expects the new facility to be ready by March or April.

Bloomfield Road Landscape joins several other businesses preparing to open just off the Cape Girardeau Regional Airport exit.

Reed's Metals will open its East Outer Road facility early this month, and Richardson Tire is expected to open a new Nash Road facility later in July.

Scott City Mayor Ron Cummins said several businesses are on the horizon for Scott City as well, including a coffee shop along Main Street.

"Our city has been blessed to bring so many new businesses to the region," Cummins said. "And we're always looking for more."
