Who better to understand what a shopper wants than another shopper?
With this theory in mind, Dawn Fallert, her mother, Sharee Galnore, and Donna Boardman, decided to put their love of visiting specialty and collectible shops to good use. They opened High Street Station Nov. 1, 1998 and have had no regrets since.
"I'm very glad we did," Fallert said. "We're growing a lot. It's very encouraging to us."
Located at 106 South High Street, the shop gives the three a chance to do something they had always thought about doing.
"It was kind of a dream for all three of us," Fallert said. "When we'd go out of town, we all enjoyed visiting different shops. We thought we could do it ourselves and there weren't many shops in the Jackson area. It just happened."
The hand-pained wall lettering, done by Boardman, reads "Good friends; special memories; enjoying life along the way." This sums up the aura of High Street Station.
The Station has a wide variety of gifts, from Boyd's Bears, to the Mary Engelbreit collection, to home decor items, such as handmade wreaths and willow furniture from Grandmother Willow in Scott City, to floral arrangements and much more. Sepcially-wrapped gift baskets may be ordered and bouquets and other wedding and special event needs may be met, as well.
"We have a wide variety of distinctive gifts," Fallert said, "things you usually don't find in this area."
Among those are and gourmet cooking oils, which Fallert calls "very delicious and very popular."
Coffee, hot tea and cappuccino is also available to sip leisurely at a table in the rear of the Station, or to take with one. The owners hope to build on the popularity of the cappuccino by offering free mugs to frequent drinkers and subsequent discounts. Other snacks may later be added, as well.
The threesome originally rented the historic building, before buying it in July,
1999. Since then they have restored the upstairs area, where Dewey Lukefahr's Jackson studios was located for many years. The Victorian era commercial structure has been tripped to the original brick, lending a cozy, historic atmosphere to business dinners, wedding rehearsal or shower dinners or other occasions. It is called the Brick Garden.
"Last year we spend a lot of time restoring the upstairs," Fallert said. "Now we want to focus on the gift store and concentrate hard on getting now and different gifts in the store."
