SCOTT CITY -- Though their school closed nearly three decades ago, some former students of the Gray's Point School in Scott City hope to hold a reunion this summer.
The one-room schoolhouse, which was open for 55 years, held grades one through eight. It was closed in 1954 when the country school was consolidated into the Scott City School District.
Charles Lance, chairman of the reunion committee, said only about 30 of the nearly 200 alumni of the school have been reached by the committee.
"We've been working on it for about six weeks, but some people are hard to find," he said.
Lance said because the school was in operation so many years ago, it is doubtful that all of it's former students and teachers are living. But, he said, "We're wanting to let as many people know about it as we possibly can."
Lance, who graduated from the eighth grade at Gray's Point in 1938, said that after the school closed in 1954, the building was torn down.
The school was also known as Graysboro, he said, named after a prominent family in the area at the time.
The reunion is planned for July 27 at the Scott City Park, Pavilion No. 3. For more information on the reunion, contact Lance at 264-3439 or Pat McKee at 334-1139.
