A 7-year-old girl was injured Monday when she apparently ran into a moving car in the 200 block of South Sprigg.

Cape Girardeau police reported the girl, Savannah M. Allen of 812 S. Benton, suffered a disabling injury. Additional information was unavailable from police.

A spokeswoman at Southeast Missouri Hospital said Monday night that the girl was admitted and remained in fair and stable condition. She would not say what type of injury the girl received.

Sgt. Carl Kinnison said a report on the incident said the girl ran between two northbound vehicles that had stopped in traffic and apparently into the left front of the third vehicle, which was traveling in the southbound lane. Police said the car was driven by Betsy L. Modglin, 34, of P.O. Box 309, Tamms, Ill.

The report only said the girl was crossing the street and did not say whether she was with any other children when the accident occurred, Kinnison said.

He said Modglin couldn't have helped from hitting the girl.

"I don't think she had a chance to even try to stop until after the accident" happened, he said.
