Tornado sirens will be tested at noon Wednesday by the city of Cape Girardeau and Southeast Missouri State University. The test, which lasts three minutes, is repeated at noon on the first Wednesday of each month. It is not conducted if threatening weather is in the area. The sirens are used to alert citizens to a tornado warning in Cape Girardeau County. If any funnel cloud or tornado poses an imminent threat, the sirens will sound. They are at Fire Station No. 1, 1 S. Sprigg St., Arena Park, Kiwanis Park, Shawnee Park Sports Complex and Cape County Park North. The siren means people should seek shelter and stay in touch with media using the Internet or National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather radios or other sources for weather and safety information. For information and alerts from the National Weather Service, tune your NOAA weather radio to station KXI-93 at 162.550 MHz. The City of Cape Girardeau has an Adopt-A-Siren program. To learn more, call assistant fire chief and emergency operations coordinator Mark Hasheider at 334-3211.
