EAST CAPE GIRARDEAU, Ill. -- A Bloomfield, Mo., man died Saturday after driving around barriers into a construction zone along Highway 146 and crashing head-on into a stationary paving roller.
Robert L. Aslin Jr., 29, was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after firefighters tried to extricate him from the vehicle. Witnesses told the Illinois State Police that Aslin drove off the highway and into the construction zone by navigating around barriers, turned his car around and then accelerated into the roller, which was unoccupied.
The crash happened just after noon a mile east of the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge.
The area is under construction while a separate westbound lane is being added to the highway. No lanes were closed while emergency crews worked the scene.
