Cape Girardeau will switch to automated trash and recycling pickup next week, and the city is reminding residents that they may ask that their old trash cans be removed with this week's pickup. People not wanting to keep their old trash cans should write "TAKE" or a similar message prominently on the can. Trash cans that are not reusable will be put into the garbage truck, while reusable trash cans with handles, wheels and no holes will be picked up by the street department for recycling, said Mike Tripp of the city Public Works Department.
