Nicolette Brennan's heart is in public service. The city of Cape Girardeau's public information manager is mom to Tony and fiancee of John Lyle, and a volunteer superwoman. She is a board member of SEMO Court Appointed Special Advocates and Tristate Advertising & Marketing. She also has a long list of volunteer involvement, including work with the Salvation Army, Junior Achievement, Youth Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition and Mississippi Valley Therapeutic Horsemanship. She's also a graduate of Leadership Cape 2009, the International Storytelling Institute and FEMA Emergency Management Institute. "My son changed my entire focus in life," she says. "I want him to have every opportunity possible, and I'm working hard to make that world happen."

__What do you love about your work?__

Variety. I recently started drafting updates to our emergency communication plans while concurrently blogging, editing video and evaluating technical issues with our television channel and website.

__How is your career field growing or changing?__

It is getting more technical. We can't rest with a news release or email. Now we're producing videos and distributing them through social media. It was once adequate to have a basic website. Now you need that site to work with any possible combination of machines, browsers and operating systems.

__What community issue is most important to you?__

Even before I was a parent, I always felt obligated to support efforts to protect children and even pets and wildlife, because they cannot protect themselves.
