Who's Who 2012 - Deb Maevers

Deb Maevers was told once to use what you have to help who you can every day. She does just that, whether it's helping a customer find a vintage piece to redecorate their living room or helping raise money for victims of domestic violence. Maevers is owner Pastimes Antiques in Cape Girardeau as well as the founder and executive director of the VintageNOW Fashion Show, an annual event benefiting the Safe House for Women. After graduating from Jackson High School, Maevers went to modeling school, but says she quickly learned she was better helping out behind the scenes than walking down the runway. Through the years she worked in women's fashion and interior design. She's worked as a set decorations and wardrobe consultant for several projects, including a music video shoot in Savannah, Ga. Maevers and her husband of 33 years Jim have five grown children, Kyleigh Baliva, Landon Maevers, Trey Maevers, Hailey Maevers and AJ Maevers and five grandchildren.

__How is your career field growing and changing?__

I love the mix of old and new or modern with classics in fashion and interior design. It is much more interesting to the eye. I am so glad that to see that look is at the height of popularity. Young people are seeking out classic styles that have staying power (vintage) but wearing them in a contemporary way. Also, sites such as Pinterest have really sparked people's interest in projects using old windows, doors, etc., which as an owner of an antique store, I am thrilled. I love how everything can be re-purposed.

__What's the secret to your success?__

Determination with passion or passion with determination. Some people in my immediate family would call it stubbornness, which is fine. But I believe everything happens for a reason. And if there is a "reason" I have a dream or goal in my head I should immediately act upon it. OK, I get a little obsessed at times. But I am very focused when I have a project in the works. Also, especially concerning the VintageNOW Fashion Show, having the right group of people working together is the only way to have a successful event. Because, believe me, it does take a village.
