Brethold is the local American Red Cross chapter's health and safety director, an expert in the areas of first aid, Automated External Defibrillators (AED), emergency response, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and injury prevention. She's an advocate for the importance of safety and preparedness training because she understands that cardiac arrest or injuries happen at an instant, often with little warning, and people need to be prepared. She is such a strong advocate because she herself lost a family member to cardiac arrest and has been a first responder to several accident scenes, remaining calm and providing necessary care. She's involved in the Jackson Chamber of Commerce.

Her goals for the community in the next five years...

"The first goal is to educate and train at least one person in every family in CPR, first aid and automated external defibrillation. These life-saving skills are priceless when ensuring a loved one's life. The second goal is to make AEDs available within two to three minutes to any individual who is in cardiac arrest. This goal will be met when all businesses, schools, community centers and public buildings are equipped with these life- saving devices."
