Rose Bed Inn owners break ground on new art gallery

The owners of the Rose Bed Inn Bed & Breakfast in Cape Girardeau are planning to add an art gallery. Set to open Oct. 2, the Aartful Rose at 631 S. Sprigg St. will feature an art gallery and banquet hall that can accommodate up to 150 people.

The groundbreaking for the facility was held last week. Co-owner James Coley said work began that day and should be complete by September.

Coley and Eldon Nattier have been working to restore the area that is home to the Aartful Rose, Rose Bed Inn and other buildings since they took ownership of the bed and breakfast eight years ago.

The lot for the Aartful Rose has been empty for at least 10 years, Coley said. He and Nattier purchased the property in January.

As they researched the need for an art gallery, Coley said, they found a niche for this type of facility as part of a larger piece of the city's revitalization.

"With this city's comprehensive plan focusing so much of it on South Cape, this is an important step," Coley said. "As private businessmen we love the fact that the plan is focused so much on South Cape and supports this type of endeavor by private businesses.

"It means more support and more rebirth of this section of the city," Coley said. "When we as urban pioneers made the decision to come here, we did the right things to stand firm that this is a good place, but it just needs the proper attention and tender loving care."

* Bayou Bar & Grill still open: Linda Wooten, who with her husband, Bill owns the Bayou Bar and Grill in Pocahontas, contacted me last week to say that contrary to what may have been misunderstood by the public, the restaurant is still open for business. The storm May 8 tore the roof off the structure and closed the business for one day. However, Wooten said, the restaurant still had its original flat roof underneath the damaged one.

She said they now have replaced the damaged roof and upgraded the restaurant as well. New features include the a roof, ceiling fan and lights for its outdoor patio.

Bayou Bar & Grill is at 6611 County Road 532, about five miles north of Jackson. The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 11 a.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday. The phone number is 833-9999.
