Southeast Missouri Hospital Administrator James W. Wente has been elected to a three-year term on the Missouri Hospital Association Board of Trustees.

Wente will represent District VII on the board.

As a member of the board, he will help in establishing association policies.

"I'm honored to represent the Southeast District and to have the opportunity to work with other health-care executives throughout the state on critical issues facing health care in the next three years," said Wente.

Wente joined the Southeast Missouri Hospital staff in 1975 as assistant administrator and chief financial officer. In January 1991, he became the institution's chief executive.

He now serves as the association's District VII president, vice chairman of the its finance committee, and representative to its medical practice and research center ad hoc committee. He also serves on its management service corporation board.

Larry Bayliss, senior vice president of marketing with Boatmen's Bancshares Inc. in St. Louis, will be guest speaker at the Nov. 16 meeting of the Advertising Federation of Southeast Missouri.

The meeting will be held at the Drury Lodge with a social hour at 5 p.m. and dinner at 6.

Topic of the meeting will be "Humor in Advertising." Cost is $15. Additional information is available by calling Wes Wade, 335-4604.

Karen Drury has joined Robertson's Creative Photography as receptionist, office manager and artist.

Drury, a native of Cape Girardeau, is a graduate of Southeast Missouri State University with a bachelor of science degree in art. She previously was employed by Concord Printing and Craftsman Office Supply.

Robertson's, 605 Broadway, a full service portrait and commercial studio, was founded in 1981.

Eight area secretaries have earned the designation of Certified Professional Secretary during the past year.

They are: Donna Cardin, Nan Robinson, Carolyn Strobl, Paula Cunningham, Ellen Seib, Jamie Birkman, Christine Pfeiffer and Barbara Seabaugh.

The designation is acquired by office professionals who have completed educational and employment experience requirements and have passed a six-part, two-day examination. It is encouraged by Professional Secretaries International.

Carol Daniel, a nurse at St. Francis Medical Center, recently became certified as a Certified Occupational Health Nurse. Daniel, of Cape Girardeau, joined the St. Francis staff in 1990.

Gina Kurre, a native of Jackson, recently received a Mid-America Regional Emmy award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for her work as a television journalist.

Kurre, 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. news anchor at KATV, an ABC affiliate in Little Rock, Ark, received her award for a two-hour news special, "From the State House to the White House," which ran on KATV the night after Bill Clinton became president. She received the award at the St. Louis Cervantes Center.

Kurre was writer and co-producer of the program, which included live interviews with Clinton campaign officials and taped reports examining the campaign year.

Kurre, who has a bachelor of science degree in journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.P. Kurre of Jackson.

Kenneth and Kathleen Gibbar, owners of The Little People, a 24-hour child-care center in Jackson, recently attended the International Center for Child Care Professional Training Seminar at St. Louis.

Martin and Marilyn Appelbaum, child-care consultants of Houston, Texas, were featured speakers. Topics included discipline techniques, how to handle difficult parents, and how to motivate children.

Johnny Ray Conklin of the Missouri Council of Carpenters, Cape Girardeau; Tom Tucker of the SEMO Regional Planning and Economic Development Commission, Perryville; and A.C. Sullivan Jr. of Mineral Area Community College, Flat River, were recently honored by the Southeast Missouri Private Industry Council.

The council, which recently observed its 10th year of incorporation, recognized Conklin, Tucker and Sullivan for dedication and service as 10-year charter members.

Comprised of 26 private-business people and 13 public-sector members, the council works with the Job Training Partnership Act to serve employment and training needs in Southeast Missouri.

KFVS-TV has added two new employees.

Suzanne Stevens has been named producer for KFVS-12 Heartland News and Daniel C. Odle has been named photographer-reporter at the company's Carbondale news bureau.

The appointments were announced by news director Mike Beecher.

Stevens, a native of Toledo, Ohio, is a graduate of Northwestern University with a bachelor of science degree in journalism. Prior to joining KFVS, she worked as producer-reporter for WFLI-TV at Lafayette, Ind.

Odle previously worked as a weather anchor, reporter and photographer for WSIL-TV at Carterville. Before that, he worked at radio stations in Carbondale and West Frankfort, Ky. He is a graduate of Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, with a bachelor of arts degree in radio and television.

KFVS-12 is a CBS affiliate.

Nancy Mattingly, cancer program coordinator at Southeast Missouri Hospital, has received the American Cancer Society's Missouri Division Individual Award for outstanding services in the area of cancer control in the Cape Girardeau unit.

Mattingly received her award during the 47th Missouri Division American Cancer Society annual meeting in Jefferson City. She was also re-elected to a two-year term on the Board of Directors of the Missouri Division of the society.

She is past president of the Cape Girardeau Unit of the society. She also serves as chairman of the Missouri Division Service and Rehabilitation Committee.

Dr. Richard E. Moore, a Cape Girardeau physician, has received the Physician's Recognition Award.

The award, presented by the Missouri State Medical Association and the American Medical Association, is earned by physicians who voluntarily complete 150 credit hours of continuing medical education courses in a three-year period.

Two Cape Color World Inc. employees have earned the title of Certified Coatings Consultants, designating them as experts in the field of coatings.

Thomas G. Vanek and Rosa May White received the designations following a comprehensive test covering customer relations, coatings knowledge, product application and decorating during a seminar at St. Louis.

Karen Hendrickson, assistant administrator at Southeast Missouri Hospital, has been elected to a one-year term as secretary-treasurer of the Missouri State Board of Nursing.

Hendrickson was named to the board in January by Gov. Mel Carnahan. She also serves on three board committees: executive, practice and discipline.

Hendrickson has served Southeast Missouri Hospital as its chief nursing officer for 11 years. She is a member and past president of the Missouri Organization of Nurse Executives, Southeast Missouri Council of Directors of Nursing, and the 8th District Missouri Nurses Association. She also served as co-principal investigator for the Missouri Nursing 2000 Project.

Glen Allen Mays has been promoted to account executive at the Federal Land Bank and Production Credit Association at Sikeston. Prior to his promotion, he served as loan officer in the Dexter branch office.

In his new position, Mays is responsible for new-business development, credit-related services and promotional activities in six counties: Stoddard, Scott, Bollinger, Mississippi, Cape Girardeau and New Madrid.

Mays is a graduate of Southeast Missouri State University with a bachelor of science degree in agri-business management.
