SoutheastHEALTH vice president and chief nursing officer Dr. Karen Hendrickson is retiring from a post she's held since 1982. An interim chief nursing officer will be identified over the next few weeks, said Debbie Linnes, SoutheastHEALTH president and CEO. Hendrickson served as the head nurse in Southeast's first Intensive Care Unit, which opened in 1966. She played a key role in the development of Southeast's open heart surgery program, the first of its kind in this part of Missouri. Hendrickson worked to establish the SoutheastHEALTH College of Nursing in 1990 after seeing a critical need for more nurses. Since then 500 registered nurses have completed their education at the college. In recognition of Hendrickson's service, an endowed scholarship in her name will be established by the SoutheastHEALTH Foundation for the college, which is now known as the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, Linnes said. Hendrickson's last scheduled day in the office will be July 1. She will retire with the honorary title of chief nursing officer emeritus.
