Dobbins to serve on leadership group, council

The Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention has announced that Southeast Missouri State University president Ken Dobbins has been selected to serve on the President's Leadership Group, a body of higher education presidents and chancellors who have made student substance abuse prevention a priority on their campuses.

The PLG was formed to bring national attention to alcohol and other drug issues on college and university campuses. New members like Dobbins were chosen based on their previous alcohol and other drug prevention efforts as well as their future plans for leadership in this area.

Dobbins has also been elected president of the Council on Public Higher Education, a group of 13 public four-year colleges and universities in Missouri.

His term began July 1. Art Wallhausen, associate to the president at Southeast, will serve as executive director during Dobbins' term as COPHE president.

The COPHE presidency has been held by leaders at the University of Missouri the past four years. Dobbins will succeed University of Missouri chancellor Richard Wallace.

Big Brothers Big Sisters hires new staff member

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri has hired Kathy Parsons as program manager for the Cape Girardeau outreach office. Parsons is responsible for enrolling volunteers and children in the program, as well as, matching them in one-to-one friendships. She has worked in the Cape Girardeau public schools as a social worker and has 15 years of experience in working with children in families with various backgrounds.

Diggs retires from Magna-Tel after 45 years

Shirley Diggs has retired from Magna-Tel Inc. after 45 years. Diggs was the art director for the Magna-Tel line and had been with Magna-Tel since 1958.

"Shirley has been an integral and important part of Magna-Tel's development and success," said Mary Ann Farmer, Magna-Tel president and CEO. "We express our appreciation and gratitude to Shirley for her 45 years of exemplary service to Magna-Tel and the promotional products industry."

A retirement celebration was held in Diggs' honor on June 26.

Cape native named president of Iowa firm

Former Kemin executive Hal Fallert has been named president and chief executive officer of S3i Sound, an Ames company that has developed Sound Without Speakers audio technology.

Fallert, a native of Cape Girardeau, spent 14 years with the Kemin group of companies, including duties as senior vice president of operations for Kemin Foods, LLC.

S3i Sound introduced Sound Without Speakers in early 2003. The technology incorporates solid state audio drivers and eliminates the need for conventional speakers. Half the size of a coffee cup and weighing just one and a half pounds, the S3i drivers turn any solid surface into speakers.

Fallert earned an engineering degree from Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta and an MBA from Drake University in Des Moines. He has served on the Leadership Iowa Board of Governors for three years. Fallert, his wife and two children live in West Des Moines.

Irwin wins investment performance award

Stan Irwin of the financial services firm Edward Jones recently won the firm's exclusive Ted Jones Prospecting Award for outstanding performance.

Irwin has been an Edward Jones investment representatives for almost two years.

Edward Jones is the only financial services firm advising individual investors exclusively. It is the largest firm in the nation in terms of branch offices with plans for expansion to 10,000 by 2004.
