Cape code inspector receives certification

City of Cape Girardeau senior code inspector Steve Higgerson has recently received his certification as an electrical inspector. The International Association of Electrical Inspectors awards these certificates only to those individuals who have passed a written examination and completed certain continuing education requirements. Higgerson, who began as an engineering inspector in 1985, has recently completed 20 years of service with the city. He is currently responsible for inspecting all electrical construction in industrial, commercial, and residential buildings.

Veterans home nurse wins Leadership Award

Scott Whitsel, a registered nurse and supervisor at the Missouri Veterans Home, was chosen by his co-workers for the quarterly Leadership Award. Whitsel best demonstrated the principles of the Veterans Home "Achieve Global Training Program."

Chiropractor participates in milestone study

Scott B. Smith, D.C., a chiropractic practitioner in the Cape Girardeau area, recently participated in a milestone research project for the chiropractic profession. Smith was among approximately 10 percent of the nation's full-time licensed chiropractors who were randomly selected to represent the profession by providing information for a "survey of chiropractic practice."

Physician joins Illini Medical Associates

Dr. Shaina L. Schiwitz, DO, is the newest physician partner with Illini Medical Associates in Jerseyville, Ill. She is the daughter of Bud and Brenda Schiwitz of Benton, Mo. Schiwitz received a bachelor's degree from Southeast Missouri State University and graduated from Nova Southeast University College of Medicine in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. She completed a family practice residency at Genesys Regional Medical Center in Grand Blanc, Mich., in June 2003.

Southeast professor wins teaching award

Dr. John Cherry, associate professor of marketing at Southeast Missouri State University, has been selected as one of the top three winners of the 2005 Hormel Meritorius Teaching Award. He also earned the Teaching Excellence Award. As one of the top three winners, Cherry will participate in a final competition for Hormel's Master Teaching Award on March 16 in Chicago at the Marketing Management Association national conference.
