New barbershop to open on Broadview in June

A new barbershop will open by June 1 at 121 S. Broadview St. Suite 3 in Cape Girardeau. FroShapers is a contemporary barbershop that will offer razor shaves, haircuts, eyebrow arches and necklines. Owners Aubrey and Tara Daniel, who have owned other barbershops in town, will employ four barbers.

Aubrey Daniel said he was researching the market and found a lack of traditional barbershop services that cater predominantly to the black community.

"But it's not limited to African Americans," he said. "We feel there is a diverse market that we can reach."

FroShapers will be open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The phone number will be 339-0059.

* Tower Rock Winery closes: Tower Rock Winery in Altenburg, Mo., has closed. Owner Cheryl Breuer said she is looking for someone to purchase the winery.

"The Breuer family would like to thank all the friends, loyal supporters and customers of the winery that helped make it the success that we all enjoyed," Breuer said.

* McCafe to debut in Cape Girardeau by May 27: Last week I told you that McCafe is coming to all 14,000 McDonald's U.S. locations, but I didn't have a date for the Cape Girardeau and Jackson stores. The line features iced vanilla lattes, hot mochas and other specialty coffee drinks. The fast-food chain recently began a $100 million McCafe marketing campaign that includes TV, radio, print, online and outdoor ads.

Cape Girardeau owner Shannon Davis was out of town when I requested the opening dates and called me last week to let me know the Broadway store will begin selling McCafe items either May 26 or 27, with the other Cape Girardeau store following a day or two later. Davis said the Jackson McDonald's would begine selling McCafe drinks the next week.

* Realty Executives wins award: Realty Executives International, based in Phoenix, has awarded Realty Executives of Cape County the 2008 Circle of Excellence Award. Each year the company recognizes 5 percent of its franchises that meet certain benchmarks in areas such as executive training, customer service, growth, technology and community involvement. The local company has offices in Cape Girardeau and Jackson.

"It's nice when the international office recognizes the dedication of our staff and sales executives," said local Realty Executives broker and owner Susan Cole. "To be considered in the top 5 percent is particularly rewarding."

* From Sharon Sanders' files: Southeast Missourian librarian Sharon Sanders has a vast knowledge of events that have occurred in the area, along with a collection of newspaper articles that date back many years. She told me about two anniversaries for this week.

First, BioKyowa opened for business May 18, 1984. This month marks the plant's 25th anniversary.

Also, Saturday or Sunday is the 50th anniversary of the opening of Southeast Missouri Lumber Co.'s building at 411 Jefferson Ave. Sanders told me the business actually dates to 1905, when it was incorporated by John Himmelberger. The store on Jefferson, which is still home to Southeast Lumber, opened in 1959, Sanders said.

* Kasasa checking system: If you've driven past Wood and Huston Bank in Jackson lately you may have noticed a crane with the sign "Kasasa" attached to it. Bank management said the checking system fits into the institution's philosophy. Kasasa works with community banks like Wood and Huston and Southern Missouri Bank in Poplar Bluff, Mo. Features of the system include interest paid on customers' checking accounts, the ability to donate some of the interest or ATM deductions to charity and free iTunes downloads.

* Job Corps fair Friday: The Missouri Job Corps of Cape Girardeau will hold its first Job Corps Health & Career Fair between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Friday at the Salvation Army, 701 Good Hope St. in Cape Girardeau.

Career transition specialist Shalawnda Wickware said the focus of the event is to provide career advice and health tips to young women between the ages of 16 and 24. Vendors will include Metro Business College, National Guard, Cape Girardeau County Health, John's Pharmacy, Southeast Missouri State University, Navy, Cape Girardeau Transit Authority and Building Blocks.

* Southeast Missouri Hospital Auxiliary and Foundation scholarship deadline nears: The Southeast Missouri Hospital Auxiliary and Southeast Missouri Hospital Foundation award scholarships each year to students who want to become registered nurses, receive certification in a health-care-related field or get an advanced degree in health care. The application deadline is May 30.

Applications are available on the second floor of the Regional Cancer Center off Lacey Street in the office of Dr. Gwen Thoma, director of educational services.

In 2008, the auxiliary awarded twenty-six $500 scholarships and two $1,000 scholarships for advanced study for a total of $15,000. The Hospital Foundation awarded scholarships to 35 individuals for a total of $33,500.
