DEXTER, Mo. -- Modern Woodmen of America honored four local individuals for outstanding leadership of Modern Woodmen members age 16 and younger. Elaine Halterman of Essex, Mo., was honored for 12 years of leadership in her community and led the city of Essex' club to merit status in 2009. Ronda Taylor was honored for leadership efforts in Dexter and was noted for contributing service to the community for two years. Regina Halterman of Essex, Mo., was noted for giving her time and talents for 21 years. Marilyn Klueppel, a Modern Woodmen Youth Service Club leader for two years, led the Sikeston, Mo., club to merit status in 2008 and 2009.
POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- Jason Hoseney was hired as vice president for student success at Three Rivers Community College, completing the three-man administrative team at the school. He last served as director of TRIO student support services at Lower Columbia College, Longview, Wash. He replaces Dr. Martha Kirkman, who had filled the position since August after the initial search proved unsuccessful. Kirkman returned to her role as business instructor at Three Rivers and Hoseney began his new duties Jan. 11.
ADVANCE, Mo. -- In November, Amy Gilmore and Leeanna Brashear, first grade teachers at Advance Elementary School, presented a program at the National Association for the Education of Young Children Conference in Washington, D.C., which attracted 20,000 teachers from around the world. The women spoke to approximately 75 teachers about the Young Author's Program at their school.

Rowland represents District 6 in the southeast area of the state and has served in the position since 2005.

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- Helena Ruhl, accounting and business instructor at Three Rivers Community College, was recognized for 22 years of excellence in the classroom by the Missouri Community College Association. She received a Senior Faculty Service Award at the MCCA convention at Lake of the Ozarks. This is the first year MCCA has presented the award; one faculty member was recognized from each college in the association.
DEXTER, Mo. -- Four city employees were honored for their years of service at a Dec. 7 meeting of the Dexter Board of Aldermen. They included fire chief Al Banken, 45 years; assistant fire chief Don Seymore, 30 years; assistant chief of police Sammy Stone, 25 years; and police department administrative assistant Tammy Fields, 10 years.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Gov. Jay Nixon appointed Christy M. Hency of Oran, Mo., to the position of Scott County circuit clerk. She replaces Pam Glastetter, whose resignation as circuit clerk was effective Nov. 30. Hency has worked in the Scott County circuit clerk's office since 2004 and was also a clerk with the office from 1997 to 2000. She has received the designation of certified court manager from the Institute for Court Management, National Center for State Courts.
Carolyn Kempf, president and CEO of Elite Travel in Cape Girardeau, and Shannon Thompson, certified destination wedding and honeymoon consultant with the agency, attended the 16th annual MLT University at St. Paul River Centre, St. Paul, Minn. They completed training on travel to Hawaii, Las Vegas, Cancun and Riviera Maya, Mexico, and Ireland and learned more about Delta Vacations, Continental Airlines Vacations and Worry-Free Vacations. Thompson also completed the Cancun Tourism Institute's comprehensive training program on vacation travel to Cancun; she is now an Official Cancun Counselor. Additionally, both Kempf and Thompson recently completed educational property tours and site knowledge of Barceló Maya Palace Deluxe in Riviera Maya, Mexico.
PARK HILLS, Mo. -- Crouch, Farley & Heuring PC sent one partner and four employees to a training seminar hosted by the National Association of Tax Professionals. The seminar, "The Essential 1040," familiarized accountants and tax preparers with new provisions impacting the 2009 tax season for individual tax returns. FARMINGTON, Mo. -- After nearly 10 years as director of the Farmington Chamber of Commerce, Ursula Kthiri announced Dec. 9 that she would step down to take a job with Parkland Health Center. She served the chamber through 2009 and began her new position as director of foundation and marketing Jan. 4. Assistant director Beth Simmons and assistant Tammy Thomas will handle office duties until Kthiri's replacement is found.
Danielle Boyd, public safety communicator with the City of Cape Girardeau, received Association of Public Safety Communications Officials Public Safety Telecommunicator 1 instructor certification. She is now able to teach the 40-hour basic state communicator course required of all 911 communicators.
DEXTER, Mo. -- Gary Kinder received the Firefighter of the Year Award for the Dexter Fire Department. The award was presented by Don Seymore, assistant fire chief, during a Dec. 15 Christmas award banquet. Kinder is a 22-year veteran of the department and was honored for his dedication and efforts in the past year. The department also honored the work of fire chief Al Banken during the 2009 ice storm.
DESLOGE, Mo. -- Debbie Kester stepped down from the Desloge Chamber of Commerce, telling the Park Hills Daily Journal Dec. 15 that she had had enough of controversies surrounding the chamber. Kester was involved with the chamber for 27 years, previously serving as president and, most recently, vice president.
Southeast Missouri State University honored history professor Frank Nickell with the 2009 Pride Award at December commencement ceremonies. Since Nickell began his career at the school in 1969, he's written several books, hosted a weekly radio program and written newspaper columns on the region's history. He was selected for the award by the council of deans after nominations were submitted from each of the university's colleges. This is the 14th year Southeast has presented the Pride Award to an example of a teacher-scholar model professor.
FARMINGTON, Mo. -- The Farmington School District announced Dec. 17 that Dr. Natalie Thomas will be the new superintendent. She will take over July 1 for interim superintendent Jerome Watson, who replaced Dr. W. L. Sanders in August. Thomas will resign from her current position as co-superintendent for Riverview Gardens School District in St. Louis.
Dr. Ronald Rosati, former vice president for academic affairs and provost at Alfred State College, State University of New York, was named provost at Southeast Missouri State University. The announcement was made Dec. 17 by the university's Board of Regents. Through a nationwide search, 56 candidates were reviewed; Rosati was one of three finalists who visited campus for interviews. He will begin his new duties Feb. 1 and succeed Jane Stephens, who is retiring after serving as provost since July 2000. The provost is Southeast's chief academic officer and is responsible for 10 colleges and schools at the University.
BISMARCK, Mo. -- The Bismarck School District hired Chuck Hasty as successor to retiring superintendent Dr. Damon Gamble. Hasty is currently assistant superintendent in the De Soto School District. He will take over as Bismarck superintendent on July 1.
KENNETT, Mo. -- Kim Campbell is resigning as principal of Senath-Hornersville High School to accept the position of superintendent at the Southland School District.
ST. LOUIS -- Judith Gosney Haggard of Kennett, Mo., was elected to a one-year term as chair of the University of Missouri Board of Curators during its Dec. 11 meeting in St. Louis. Her term began Jan. 1. Haggard served in 2009 as the board's vice chair and currently chairs the Executive Committee and Academic, Student and External Affairs Committee; she's also a member of the Compensation and Human Resources Committee and the Governance Committee. She is a family nurse practitioner at SEMO Health Network and a past examiner for the certification of substance abuse counselors. She is founder of the Dunklin County Caring Community Council and a founding member of the parent organization at Mizzou.
Modern Woodmen of America Fraternal Financial named Bob Houchins of Jackson as Rookie of the Month in the Missouri East Region for November. The award is given to a full-time representative who has been with the company less than three years and is leading the region in production.
Belladona Salon Spa & Boutique of Cape Girardeau added Sarah Marra, Rana Stewart and LaNita Jaco as stylists and Mary Bronaugh as salon and spa coordinator.
Regina Sence, market grocery manager for Wal-Mart Stores in Southeast Missouri, was elected to Southeast Missouri Food Bank's Board of Directors.
Frank Cuervo is the new associate athletic director for external affairs at Southeast Missouri State University. Cuervo, who began his duties Jan. 4, oversees sports information, marketing and development. He last worked as general manager and assistant vice president for ISP Sports and Northern Illinois University Sports Network.
Dennis Seabaugh of Cape Girardeau, tractor trailer driver for UPS, was recognized by the company for completing 30 years without an accident. He works out of the Scott City facility and provides service in Cape Girardeau, Sikeston and Earth City.
PARK HILLS, Mo. -- John Crouch, a partner in the accounting firm of Crouch, Farley & Heuring PC, attended the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants National Business Valuation Conference in San Francisco. He received training in personal goodwill valuation, valuation for tax purposes, application of the AICPA valuation standards and buy-sell agreements and attended sessions on lost profit damages, communication skills for expert witnesses and closely held owner-employee compensation. Crouch works out of the firm's Farmington, Mo., office.
Karin Bell joined the Bank of Missouri as SBA loan officer. Before joining the bank, Bell's company, KB Accounting & Consulting LLC, provided contract services in support of the bank's SBA program. She comes to her new position with over 25 years of professional and executive management experience.
FREDERICKTOWN, Mo. -- The Madison County Chamber of Commerce announced its new board members for 2010. They are Amy Kurgas, owner of IBS; Stacey Johnson, account manager with Big River Telephone; and Sandy Francis, student and individual chamber member.
DEXTER, Mo. -- Six Stoddard County Ambulance District employees were honored with Star of Life Awards Dec. 19. Awards are given to employees whose actions during an emergency response resulted in saving a life. Three ambulance crews were honored for their actions. They include Critical Care Paramedic Amy Earls and EMT Steven Cummings, who delivered a baby during the January 2009 ice storm; Paramedic Sam Pearson and EMT Joshua Sailer, who restarted a Puxico, Mo., man's heart after it failed last summer; and Critical Care Paramedic Chuck Kasting and Tyler Juden, who revived a Dexter resident who had gone into cardiac arrest.
STE. GENEVIEVE, Mo. -- Marion Webery retired from the Ste. Genevieve County Road District after 38 years of service. He started working for the district in 1971 and became road district foreman in 1991. Ste. Genevieve County Commissioners presented Webery with a watch and plaque Dec. 28.
KENNETT, Mo. -- The Families Support Project recently recognized lead agents at its monthly meeting. They include FSP Coordinator Beverly Wilburn, Mabeline Woods, Lynette Cruz and Buddy James. FSP serves families in Dunklin and Pemiscot counties.
Tom K. O'Loughlin II received the 2009 Judge Robert E. Brauer Innovations in Bankruptcy Law Award. The annual award is in honor of Judge Brauer, a former chief U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge of the Eastern District of Missouri. The award is given to a Missouri attorney selected by the Bankruptcy Practice Memorial Fund in association with the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis. Sikeston, Mo., attorney Rice P. Burns Jr. presented the award at the Fund's meeting in St. Louis. O'Loughlin practices in Cape Girardeau with his brother, Pat, and daughter, Erica Koetting.
