POPLAR BLUFF -- All Star Music, Sound and Lighting has been around for 15 years, but it's barely three months old at its newest location here.

The business opened in November at 1335 N. Westwood Blvd. All Star has three other locations -- Batesville, Jonesboro and Walnut Ridge in Arkansas.

"We've wanted to open a store in Poplar Bluff for a long time, but had to wait for the opportunity," said manager Rick Sawyer.

Sawyer and assistant manager Ricky Reagan operate the 6,500-square-foot store with the help of owner J.R. Rogers.

All Star offers name-brand equipment, including Peavey, Fender, Martin, Mackie, Sound Craft, Pearl drums and Sabian cymbals. Customers will find a large selection of instruments, accessories, books and videos.

Lighting equipment, American DJ party lighting and fog machines are available to rent or buy.

"We have serious, professional lighting," said Sawyer.

All Star repairs amplifiers and stringed instruments, including guitars, autoharps, banjos and violins. Sawyer specializes in the instrumental aspect while Reagan specializes in the electric, sound and lighting.

Sawyer said that he wants to invite music teachers to visit the store.

"I want to reach music teachers, especially piano teachers, so they can come in and help me provide them the books they need for their students," he said.

Sawyer credits his extensive musical background for his knowledge and capability. After moving to Poplar Bluff from Sacramento, Calif., where he was employed with Tower Records for 15 years, he worked at Jay's Music until it closed in 1999. He's played live music gigs, made recordings and written songs.

"I've been playing guitar for 35 years. When you play seriously for that long, you will have acquired and traded equipment and become very knowledgeable," said Sawyer. "I've been in the music industry for 23 years."
