Commerce Bancshares Inc. announced record earnings of $27.3 million for the quarter ending March 31, an increase of 9 percent from the $25 million of the same period in 1995. Per-share earnings were 74 cents, up 9 percent from the first quarter last year. The return on assets for the quarter was 1.16 percent, with a return on equity of 12.17 percent.
