Citizens Mutual Insurance Company is observing its 100th year in business.
The company was founded April 27, 1901, in the Grange Hall of Apple Creek Township in Cape Girardeau County.
When Citizens was first founded, it consisted of 300 policyholders and insured $285,000 worth of assets. Today, the company insures more than $395 million in property.
The company joined the Columbia (Mo.) Insurance Group in 1982. Gene E. Wills is executive vice president of Citizens Mutual. Robert J. Wagner is president of the Columbia Group.
