CyberTel Cellular has unveiled its "Cellular Rewards" program.
Under the new program, customers can earn points redeemable for free air time, merchandise gifts or travel awards. For each dollar spent on local cellular services, one point is earned.
"When customers reach 350 points, they are eligible for a level-one award -- 50 minutes of free air time," noted Wayne Smith, CyberTel general manager. An individual who spends $35 a month can earn 50 free minutes every 10 months.
Merchandise gifts include televisions, VCRs, luggage, sport watches and fax machines.
Customers may call 1-800-807-7000 to enroll in the new program.
McDonald's is going to "test" room service in about 20 roadside motels across the nation.
Details of the test are still in the works, said McDonald's spokeswoman Ann Connolly. A starting date for the test has not been determined.
The Golden Arches will begin a test run and deliver a menu that could include items such as Big Macs, Filet O' Fish, Quarter Pounders and French fries. McDonald's, based in the Chicago suburb of Oak Brook, already delivers children's meals on United Airlines flights. This will be the company's first venture with motels.
Hospitality Franchise Systems Inc. will operate the new venture. The franchise company already offers Pizza Hut delivery to guests at Days Inn, Super 8, Howard Johnson, Park Inns and Ramada Inns. All of Hospitality's 4,000 properties would be eligible to participate in the delivery service if it is continued after the test.
WEST FRANKFORT, Ill. -- Zeigler Coal Co. has announced it will shut down Old Ben No. 25 near West Frankfort in mid-August and lay off 200 workers.
Company spokesman Vic Svec said the closing was caused by the 1990 Clean Air Act, which sets limits on sulfur dioxide emissions. He said the mine's only customer, Georgia Power, decided not to renew its contract that expires June 30.
The mine produced 1.6 million tons of coal in 1993.
Kenneth Craig, president of United Mine Workers Local 2250, said the announcement was not a surprise. The closing had been rumored since the UMW strike ended in December.
