Procter and Gamble Co.'s earnings fell 4 percent during its third fiscal quarter ended March 31.

The company earned $482 million, or 66 cents a share, down from $502 million, or 70 cents a share, for the same period a year ago.

Revenue was up 1.2 percent for the quarter, to $7.44 billion, from $7.35 billion a year ago.

The earnings loss was attributed to a big investment loss on two interest-rate swap contracts. Without the investment loss, the company said earnings would have been up 16 percent.

KANSAS CITY - Missouri's fourth-largest banking company has changed its name from United Missouri Bancshares Inc. to UMB Financial Corp.

The name was changed Thursday after approval by shareholders. The change was designed to reflect that the $6.5 billion company serves a broader area, operating 30 banks in Illinois, Missouri, Kansas and Colorado.

"UMB Financial Corp. is a strong name that can help us illustrate our ability to serve all communities, no matter in what state that community might be located," said Chairman R. Crosby Kemper Jr.

The company said it earned a record $13.3 million in the first quarter, a 41 percent increase. Alexander Kemper, president of the holding company's flagship bank in Kansas City, attributed the increase to "tremendous growth in our commercial loan business."

Also, the company acquired 12 Kansas banks last year, boosting earnings in the quarter by $1.7 million.

Boatmen's Bancshares reported profits were up 8 percent in the first quarter, while earnings per share rose 6.5 percent over the level of a year ago.

Chairman Andrew Craig said the first-quarter results were ahead of expectations. "We are increasingly confident that recent loan growth trends will continue, and we remain optimistic about the earnings outlook for the year," he said.

Boatmen's, the largest bank based in Missouri, has branches in Cape Girardeau and Jackson.
