KFVS12's Heartland Cares flood relief efforts during the "Flood of 1993" have won the 1993 CBS Excellence in Community Service award.

"Awards are nice to win," said Paul Keener, promotion manager at KFVS12. "But, this one is special because it's not just a pat on the back from inside the business. This one represents efforts to help our viewers in a real way, aside from news and entertainment programming."

KFVS12 conducted a two-day telethon in July 1993 to raise cash and supplies for flood victims. Following the initial drive, individual communities started developing their own relief efforts under the Heartland Cares cover. Recent figures show that a total of more than $350,000 in cash, cleaning supplies and food was raised by the project.

All CBS affiliates are eligible for the CBS Excellence in Community Service awards.

As a result of the KFVS12 win, CBS has donated $2,500 each to the local American Red Cross and Salvation Army, partners in the Heartland Cares relief effort.

The Small Business Development Center of Southeast Missouri State University has been awarded a subcontract to start operating a Missouri Procurement Assistance Center.

"There are eight procurement assistance centers in Missouri, but there was a definite lack of service to Southeast Missouri," said Buz Sutherland, director of the Small Business Development Center. "It was evident that a center was needed in our area."

The Missouri Procurement Assistance Centers (MOPAC) Network is funded through the Department of Defense and Defense Logistics Agency to help Missouri businesses compete and win government contracts.

"The government is the largest consumer of goods and services in the world," said Sutherland. "There is a tremendous potential for Southeast Missouri businesses to sell their goods and services to the government."

George Williams has been hired to lead the center here. He previously worked for the Missouri Enterprise Business Assistance Center at Rolla. He is a graduate of UM-Rolla and has a master's degree in industrial engineering from St. Louis University.

Boatmen's Bancshares Inc. Board of Directors has declared the regular quarterly dividend on common stock of 31 cents per share, payable April 1 to stockholders of record Feb. 10.

The bank holding company is headquartered in St. Louis.

D&K Wholesale Drug Inc., headquartered in St. Louis, announced net sales of $56.1 million, up 36 percent over the same period a year ago, and net earnings of $190,000 or 8 cents a share for the third quarter, ending Dec. 31. Net earnings for the third quarter a year ago were $59,000.

D&K Wholesale Drug Inc. is a full-service, regional wholesale distributor, supplying customers from facilities in Cairo, Ill., and Lexington, Ky.

The Drury Inn at Interstate 465 & U.S. 421 in Indianapolis, Ind., has been rated number one in the chain's Guest Service Index (GSI) for 1993.

The rating is determined by hotel guests, based on handling of reservations, hospitality of hotel staff, attention to room detail and breakfast quality.

"The Indianapolis hotel received a rating of over 97 percent," said Charles "Chuck" Drury Jr., president of Drury Inns Inc., which owns and operates more than 60 hotels in 11 states.

Jeff Theiss is general manager of the 110-room Indianapolis hotel, which opened in March of 1986.

HERRIN, Ill. -- Maytag Corporation has selected Newton, Iowa, as the site for its new plant which will manufacture a new horizontal axis washing machine.

The recent announcement was a disappointment for Herrin, Ill., officials, who had worked hard to attract the new plant to the Southern Illinois area.

A Maytag manufacturing plant, which employs more than 700 at Herrin, will continue to produce current washer models.

Maytag officials said the decision was based on the overall cost study which determined that production costs would be lower in Newton.

Maytag has 21 manufacturing operations and 21,000 employees in seven countries.

Missourians spent $124 less for insuring each of the state's 3.1 million private passenger autos than the national average, according to a new National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) report.

The report was for the 1992 year.

The average Missouri expenditure per vehicles stood at $493 a year, or 34th among the 50 states and District of Columbia.

"This kind of overall performance reflects well on Missouri motorists and policyholders, the competitive nature of the market and the responsiveness of insurers in the state," said Jay Angoff, Missouri Department of Insurance director.

FENTON, Mo. -- Chrysler is considering producing trucks at an existing plant here, a move that could create thousands of new jobs, a company spokesman said.

Chrysler operates two plants at Fenton in southwest St. Louis County. Plant No. 2 currently makes minivans. Plant No. 1, which closed in 1991, is undergoing renovation. It is scheduled to reopen in 1995, when a new model minivan will be manufactured there.

Chrysler's original plan called for the 3,000 Fenton workers to move from Plant No. 2 to Plant No. 1 in 1995. But because of expanding sales of its truck lines, Chrysler now says it may keep both plants open and produce both trucks and minivans.
