MALDEN -- Federal-Mogul Corp. announced June 29 it was adding up to 50 jobs to its Malden facility. It currently employs 300 workers.
"You're witnessing a real success story," said plant manager Dave Whaley. "Two years ago, the company was considering shutting the plant because of competitive pressures and a real need for improvement in our manufacturing cost base."
In the past two years, he said, the plant has become a "world-class competitor in quality, delivery, product innovation into the market." Because of these improvements, Federal-Mogul has moved work from a plant in South Carolina.
"This year, we will see the addition of $7 to $10 million of new work coming into Malden with the creation of 30 to 50 new jobs for the Malden area," Whaley said. "As long as the plant continues to improve, we could fully expect the local plant to continue to grow and prosper."
"We're glad to be here. We contribute in many ways to this community and feel we're partners in progress with the community, with our union."
He recognized the contributions and support of local, state and federal officials in not only keeping the company in the area, but also in its efforts to expand.
Whaley said the jobs available would be mostly for machine operators, with salaries ranging from $13 to $14 per hour.
Federal-Mogul is a leading global supplier to original equipment manufacturers of vehicles and industrial products, and after-market retailers and wholesalers.
The company has been in Malden since 1965. At one time, the Malden plant was Federal-Mogul's only piston plant in the U.S.
