For Discovery Playhouse executive director Jennifer Mullix, the most rewarding part of operating a children's museum is seeing the pleasure that the children and their parents get from their visit.

"The one thing that we hear every day is 'Thank you' from our guests," said Mullix, who was chosen to head the museum after a national search by the board of directors. Before beginning her duties at Discovery Playhouse in July, Mullix served for six years as director of education at The Children's Museum of Denver.

Since opening their doors at 502 Broadway in Cape Girardeau in April 2010, Discovery Playhouse has seen 19,000 guests visit to enjoy the interactive exhibits which are designed to both entertain and educate children of all ages. Children are able to enjoy a "hands-on" play experience while learning about banking, shopping, dentistry and other life experiences.

One of the newest exhibits at the museum, "Pollywog Pond," is designed to appeal to children ages four and under.

Mullix said that attendance by that age group has risen as a result of the exhibit.

Sponsored by Procter & Gamble, Pollywog Pond focuses on early childhood education. Green and blue carpeting simulates water and grass in the Pollywog Pond environment. Children can board a small boat and catch fish using magnetic fishing poles.

The not-for-profit organization that oversees Discovery Playhouse was set up in 2006, but it wasn't until 2010 that the hard work and planning of the volunteers saw the museum finally open.

Plans for 2011 include the opening of three new exhibits on the main floor of the museum, including a new water play area. This year will also see some exhibits open on the second floor.

Another addition that guests will appreciate this spring will be the opening of a new parking area located behind the museum with an entrance on Middle St. Previously visitors have either parked on the street or at the lot across the street, meaning that parents and children have had to cross the traffic on Broadway.

"It is important to us that families visiting the museum have access to convenient and close parking," Mullix said. Discovery Playhouse relies on financial support from visitors and patrons to operate. In addition to general admission sales, visitors can purchase annual memberships and gift certificates. Group visits to the museum are popular, as are birthday parties, Mullix said. Unique toys that are both fun and educational Souvenir and educational items are available at the museum store.

Another significant source of revenue for the museum is its last year was its March 21 annual "FUNdraiser."  First held last March, which gave the public its first look at the attraction. that event raised $63,000 from businesses and patrons. The second annual FUNdraiser will be held April 30. Mullix said community support is critical to the success of the museum.

"We truly feel appreciated and loved by our community. We strive to be a 'must see' for every child who either lives in or visits this region."
