Chateau Girardeau's open house for its new one-bedroom residential care apartments was held Saturday. Each unit has 550 square feet and access to a spa, laundry facilities, large kitchen/dining room and a sitting area located within walking distance, all accessible by one hallway. The bedroom, living room and bathroom within the apartment are equipped with an alarm that will bring immediate assistance from a nurse. Support bars on either side of the commode fold up when not in use.
Robert Earley, 83 a retired CPA, moved into his one-bedroom apartment about a month ago. He lived in the Chateau Girardeau estates, a more independent living facility on the premises, for almost 11 years. He liked it there, but with health problems that make ambulation difficult he and his daughters decided this would be a good move.
Earley still drives, but there's a shuttle service available hourly if he choses not to drive. While three meals are provided daily, the apartment has a kitchen, complete with counter access for a wheelchair. A microwave, stove and refrigerator come standard.
Other amenities include medication supervision, assistance with daily living, housekeeping and a variety of therapies.
