HME is an illness transmitted by ticks. Masters' paper was also published in the book, "Rickettsial Diseases at the Turn of the Third Millennium."

Masters also made presentations on Lyme borreliosis and other emerging tick-borne diseases in Munich, Germany, following the conference in France.
