Many people dream of owning a private island, but perhaps not in the way it happened for Derek and Debbie Wilson.

The Riverhouse is a restaurant normally found at the end of Route N in Scott City. But after the record flood on the Mississippi River, the restaurant with a wraparound porch also was surrounded by water.

"We dodged a bullet," said Derek Wilson, who owns The Riverhouse with his wife, Debbie. "At its highest, the water was two feet from the concrete around the building, and then we had another three feet to go before it reached the building. We are thankful."

Although the photographs paint a much bleaker picture, The Riverhouse made it out of the flood relatively unscathed.

When the waters were at their highest, the parking lots were under water, and the restaurant closed for a weekend.

The waters have receded now, and they are back to business as usual.

"Right now, the rear parking lot is open," Wilson said.

He expects to have full access to all the parking areas by Saturday.

The Riverhouse is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday through Sunday.

For more information, find the restaurant's page on Facebook.
