Keeper's Kloset LLC, a consignment boutique formerly at 2136 William St., Suite 196, has moved to 52 S. Plaza Way in Cape Girardeau.

The boutique has taken the place of the front half of the eClips School of Cosmetology and Barbering, which still operates out of the back half of the building.

The business, which opened in April 2014, also has undergone a change in ownership, with former co-owner Jen Carothers taking over the business as the sole owner. Chelsea Dillick, the second former co-owner, left to focus more on her other jobs at hibu, a digital advertising company, and in real estate. Carothers also works full time for hibu, along with managing Keeper's Kloset.

Carothers said the high ceilings, amount of space and convenience in availability of the space were factors that brought the business to its new location.

"We wanted to have more space just to bring in more of what we already had, existing stuff; we didn't have enough storage over there," she said. "It had good visibility, but just for overall overhead, this was a better fit for us."

The additional space also will be beneficial to the business because a new sales element will be added in October.

"I also am starting Jenny May Boutique, which is new clothing. It will be online, but I'm also bringing pieces in here," Carothers said.

Carothers said she has wholesalers in Los Angeles who will provide women's clothing for her boutique, and she plans to incorporate children's clothes at a later date.

"Since I had this store now and things have kind of changed, I'm like, 'Why not bring in something else that could draw in more customers?' And [it's] the ease of just coming in and picking up that outfit instead of ordering it online and having to wait. So I'll have it stocked in here, too, as more of a convenience type thing," she said.

Carothers said she plans to have the Jenny May Boutique up and running by Oct. 1.

With the recent addition of children's clothes to the regular offering of men's and women's clothing, Carothers said Keeper's Kloset has become a "one-stop shop for consignment." She also said the consignment boutique tries not to take clothing items older than two years, unless they are "key vintage pieces."

"We're trying to change the look of consignment, and it seems like when people think consignment, they think old, musty smell and stuff, and very disorganized and is kind of like a hunt and find," Carothers said. "We wanted to look more like a real new clothing store. *... We wanted to make it more of an easy shopping experience where you can find great pieces. We're kind of picky about what we take."

Carothers said she still has several projects to finish at the new location, including hanging more lighting fixtures, organizing more displays and putting the finishing decorative touches on the walls and in the dressing room.

"This has been just so much fun to do and learn, but it's a lot of work," she said.
