Missouri apples are ripe for the picking.
More than 50 apple orchards are located in the state, with a number of them in the Southeast Missouri area.
Tammy Bruckerhoff, horticulture marketing specialist for the Missouri Department of Agriculture, reports an abundance of apples this year.
Missouri's leading apple is the red, medium-sized Jonathan. But a number of varieties are available, including the Golden and Red Delicious, Fuji, Empire and Gala.
A brochure listing the state's orchards is available by contacting the Missouri Department of Agriculture, 1-888-MO-BRAND, or at agrimo@mail.state.mo.us.
