According to the IRS, these taxpayers will owe interest on any taxes paid after April 14, and in some cases, a late payment penalty may also be due.

People unable to finish returns by the Aug. 15 deadline can apply for an additional extension of up to two months. Unlike the original extension request, however, the second extension is not automatic. Taxpayers must explain why they need extra time.
