Chrysler Corp.'s earnings more than doubled during the second quarter from a year ago, when the nation's third-biggest domestic carmaker was hit by a strike at an engine plant.
Strong truck sales and deep cost-cutting pushed the automaker's profit to $1 billion, $1.51 per diluted share for the three months ended June 30. That compares to the $483 million or 70 cents a share from a year ago when a monthlong strike cost the company more than $480 million.
Sales for the second quarter of 1998 were $17 billion, up from $14.4 billion a year ago.
